How blatant does market manipulation have to be before we do something about it? I'm hearing little more than whispers about calls for review of the events last week in Congress, and the social media response isn't any louder. When our nation is under attack we're supposed to Stand Up, Fight Back. But I think some of us who feel the urge to fight the tyrannical self-serving Trump regime feel so removed from the economy, we can't fathom how to fight back.
How do you fight against market manipulation? We can't stop Trump from rolling out economy-crippling tariffs across the world, giving his billionaire friends time to buy-buy-buy, and then "pausing" the tariffs. We can't even force the government to hold him accountable when he posts on social media that "now is a great time to buy" just hours before pausing the tariffs, as if he's a salesman at a furniture store with a fire sale coming to a close. How do we hold him accountable for pointing at his rich friends proclaiming, "that's not too bad!" in reference to how much money they've made as a result of his economic warfare?
Is taking to the streets our only weapon? Our Congressional representatives are mostly unwilling to do their jobs, so we have to gather in the streets. But what does that accomplish? Trump and his cronies in Congress are simply ignoring the protests. They have all the power, they know the cards in our hands are limited, and they're pretending they don't hear us. Americans are so disenfranchised by our system of government that Trump can win the election by getting less than 50% of the popular vote and then ignore the masses when they stand up and say "what they're doing is not okay."
The billions of dollars made by the likes of Charles Schwab was stolen from our 401Ks. 60% of Americans are invested in the stock market, including those with retirement investments. The short-term tariffs are a pump-and-dump type scheme designed to lower the value of our investments while padding the pockets of those who could afford to buy more investments while the market is down. I'm not convinced that we won't see the exact same ploy all over again in 90 days. Global markets and our standing in the global economy be-damned; they've got a buck to make off the back of the working class. It's always on our backs that the rich get richer.
It's well past time to put a plan together to cut the fat ones down to size.
